
THANKS to a partnership with CBZ Holdings, the Highlanders Club house, a property in Luveve affectionately known as "Hotel California" will undergo a significant makeover as the club approaches its centennial celebrations next year.
This was revealed by the financial institution’s management at the launch of a partnership with the club at a Bulawayo hotel on Friday night.
CBZ Holdings group chief executive officer, Lawrence Nyazema said the Highlanders centennial celebrations should not be a non event and the club’s legacy deserves to be immortalised.
Highlanders was established in 1926 by King Lobengula’s grandsons Albert and Rhodes.
“As we move towards the centennial celebrations, preparations that reflect the magnitude this club’s impact, must begin now. CBZ Holdings, as a strategic partner is committed to contribute to these preparations, ensuring the centennial celebrations of Highlanders Football Club become a defining historical moment for Zimbabwe and the global football community,” Nyazema said.
He added: “Recognising the iconic status of the Highlanders Club house, a vibrant house for engagement and sporting excellence, we are committed to partnering Highlanders to revamp and enhance this historical facility. Together let us uphold the legacy of Highlander Football Club. Our commitment is to partner with Highlanders so that the clubhouse that we showed there becomes a reality.
“The same goes with the Highlanders Village. So we are saying celebrating 100 years should not be a non event.”
The Highlanders Club house and bar recently underwent a major facelift after the club engaged businessman Phathisani Nkomo.

The club’s major sponsors Sakunda Holdings also announced in 2023 that they would revamp the facility and the club offices.
On Friday night, CBZ also introduced the the Highlanders membership card, a financial transaction card that will benefit the members in funeral and medical cover and also contribute to the club as revealed by the club’s executive director Emmanuel Tapera.
“It is my distinct pleasure and privilege today to introduce the Highlanders membership card, this is a first in this market; an innovative and versatile solution, meticulously crafted to enhance your identity and streamline your financial interactions. It rides on the visa international scheme,” Tapera said.
As members transact they activate free funeral and medical cover and for every transaction above US$50, members will activate up to US$250 in funeral cover and should they be admitted in hospital they will receive US$50 per day up to five days.
“It delights me to announce that for every transaction made using the Highlanders membership card, a portion of revenue will be directed to supporting the club directly,” he said.
Friday’s colourful event was attended by the Highlanders leadership, the executive committee and board members, city businessmen, Chief Mathema of Gwanda, Bulawayo deputy mayor Edwin Ndlovu, Highlanders legends Madinda Ndlovu, Lawrence Phiri and Sizabantu Khoza among others.
