Alex Park School Hockey Festival unearths future stars

The event brought together over 10 schools, with both boys and girls participating in a vibrant exhibition of skill and sportsmanship.

The Alex Park School Hockey Festival, held last weekend at the city primary school in Harare, delivered on its promise of an exciting showcase of emerging talent.

The event brought together over 10 schools, with both boys and girls participating in a vibrant exhibition of skill and sportsmanship.

Despite chilly conditions, parents and teachers turned out in full force, enthusiastically supporting their young athletes throughout the festival.

Participating schools included David Livingstone Primary, Dominican Convent, host Alex Park School, Avondale, Happy Primary, Philadelphia, Roshval (Marondera), St Martin’s, Waterfalls Garden, Arise and Shine, and Brookside.

David Livingstone Primary demonstrated a strong defensive game but struggled with consistency, often conceding late in their matches.

In the Girls Minis category, Happy Primary emerged victorious, with Waterfalls Garden securing second place. The host, Alex Park School’s B team, showcased dominant form in the Fillies category, claiming first place ahead of second-placed Brookside.

The senior boys’ event was characterised by intense, fast-paced matches featuring powerful long shots on goal.

Avondale ultimately triumphed in this category, with St Martin's earning silver and Roshval taking home the bronze.

Alex Park School’s sports director Walter Musakwa expressed his satisfaction with the tournament's success. “We are excited with how the games went,” Musakwa told Sports Hub.

“Not only did we see some fantastic hockey, but we also managed to keep the tournament incident-free. We had an ambulance and medical team on standby, just in case, but fortunately, we didn't need them.”

Musakwa further emphasised the importance of the festival: “It's exciting to see emerging talent in our schools. We're proud to provide a platform for these young players to showcase their skills. We're already looking forward to the next festival.”

The festival provided an entertaining display of hockey, with all teams battling fiercely on the field.

The Alex Park School Hockey Festival has once again cemented its reputation as a premier event for unearthing young talent in Zimbabwean schools hockey.
