Cimas champions cycling for awareness and safer roads

Cimas Health Group's chief executive, Vulindlela Ndlovu, emphasised the importance of inspiring a healthier community. 

CIMAS Health Group, the country's largest private medical aid society, is gearing up for the third edition of its signature cycling event, Pedal to Wellness.

The event is scheduled to take place on September 27 at Borrowdale Office Park in Harare, with a view to promote cardiovascular fitness and healthy lifestyles.

Under the theme "Promoting Heart Health & Active Lifestyles," Pedal to Wellness aligns with the upcoming World Heart Day on September 29.

According to the World Health Organisation, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year.

Cimas Health Group's chief executive, Vulindlela Ndlovu, emphasised the importance of inspiring a healthier community. 

"At Cimas Health Group, we believe in the importance of inspiring a healthier community,” Ndlovu said.

“We host our annual Pedal to Wellness event as part of our commitment to promoting a culture of wellness in line with our purpose to inspire healthier communities.”

The cycling event features three distances: 45km, 22.5km for adults, and 4.5km for children. 

Participants will be timed using a modern electronic timing system, with all will receiving a finisher's medal. 

Registration is open online, with a fee of US$10 for participants using their own bikes and US$25 for those who need bike hire. 

Children under 13 participate for free.

Ndlovu highlighted the benefits that comes with cycling, adding that it strengthens the heart muscle, improves blood circulation, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

"Pedal to Wellness is not just about fitness; it's about building lifelong habits that contribute to better health outcomes," he added. 

The event will have 50 marshals deployed to assist with route management, and participants are required to wear helmets and sign indemnity forms. 

Cimas Health Group aims to bring together 500 cyclists, including 400 adults and 100 children, to raise awareness about heart health and active lifestyles.

Ndlovu also touched on the need for infrastructure that ensures cyclist safety on the roads, calling on Harare City Council to invest in such infrastructure.

"Together, we can promote heart health and encourage active living for all," he  said.
