A tale of two lions: Ayo and Assad celebrate Pan-African sport in Tangier

Ayo and Assad

THE streets of Tangier witnessed a historic moment of sporting synergy on Tuesday last week as two of Africa’s most iconic contemporary symbols joined forces.

Ayo, the official mascot of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, traveled to Morocco to meet Assad, the emblem of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), marking a symbolic bridge between two of the continent’s most anticipated events.

The encounter began with a warm welcome at Tangier Airport, where Assad — whose name appropriately translates to "lion" in Arabic — greeted Ayo, the energetic young lion representing Senegal’s upcoming Olympic hosting duties.

The duo then traveled to the Ibn Batouta Stadium, a venue currently buzzing with the excitement of AFCON 2025.

The timing of the meeting was particularly significant, taking place just ahead of the Senegal vs. Benin Group D match.

As Tangier serves as the host city for the Senegalese national team during the tournament, the city provided the perfect backdrop for this "Pan-African passing of the torch."

Ayo was treated to a guided tour of the facilities before stepping onto the pitch to engage with the fans. The atmosphere reached a fever pitch as the two mascots entertained the crowd, embodying a shared spirit of brotherhood.

The energy seemed to translate to the field as well, with Senegal securing a dominant 3–0 victory over Benin later that evening.

While the meeting delighted fans, the underlying message was one of continental unity and the future of African youth.

Ayo carries the ambition of Dakar 2026, focusing on culture, inclusion, and the empowerment of the next generation.

Assad represents the strength, pride, and legendary hospitality that Morocco has brought to this year’s AFCON.

The collaboration highlights a future-oriented African dynamic, showing that the success of one major African sporting event serves as a foundation for the next.

By bringing the Youth Olympic spirit to the football-focused crowds of Morocco, Dakar 2026 reaffirmed its desire to shine far beyond the borders of Senegal.

As the final whistle blew in Tangier, the meeting of Ayo and Assad remained the day's most enduring image: a powerful reminder that when African sport joins hands, the entire continent wins.
