Inside sport: Marinica sould stop the experiments in Unity Cup

For once, coach Marian Marinica should be serious and call Zimbabwe’s best players available not these experiments we have been accustomed to for some time.

When the Warriors of Zimbawe troop onto The Valley on May 26 for a match against the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Zimbabweans expect the real Warriors not another experiment.

The Unity Cup four nations tournament also includes Jamaica and India will run from May 26-30 in London at English championship side Charlton Athletic’s home ground.

For once, coach Marian Marinica should be serious and call Zimbabwe’s best players available not these experiments we have been accustomed to for some time.

Zimbabweans want to see a Warriors team they can easily identify with not one that has Peter in midfield one day, John in the same position the other day, and Mathew the third day.

During the Dream Team days when the Warriors were massively popular and during Kalisto Pasuwa’s days of Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona, Zimbabweans could guess correctly the starting 11.

Not today, when every game there is a new set of Warriors and players move in and out of the team as if they are boading a train and later getting off it.

We know - although not 100% sure - that Marinica will take to London on May 26 two of either Knowledge Musona, McCauley Bonne, Godknows Murwira or all them. But do we still need them ?

What of Mongameli Tsuma ? Are we not pushing the youngster too much at this Warriors level when his rightful place at the moment should be the Cosafa Cup squad ?

What of captain Marvelous Nakamba ? Should’nt we be preparing him for another role with the Warriors rather than over stretch his already tired legs ?

Or we can for now give him the benefit of the doubt ?

We saw from the damp squib at the Four Nations Tournament that our team at the tournament did not need overhaul but that many of them did not belong there at all.

Marinica could be forgiven because there were so many withdrawals in the original team but even in that case he should be crucified for calling players who did not deserve that honour.

Barring injuries and other excuses we should be expecting to see in London, the likes of Marshall Munetsi, Tawanda Maswanhise, Tawanda Chirewa, Jordan Zemura, Andy Rinomhota, Prince Dube, Bill Antonio, Sean Fusire, Jonah Fabisch, and not those on wheel chair whom Marinica relies upon.

These players should surely be the roots of the team with the stem shooting up from there.

The Super Eagles are in top form and we should avoid a humiliating defeat in front of our expectant fans and only a fairly and merit chosen team will do justice to our cause.
