Simba Bhora stuns FC Platinum to hand Mpofu lifeline

Harrison Masina produced a masterclass in clinical finishing, netting a sensational first-half brace as Simba Bhora dismantled FC Platinum in a Castle Lager Premiership match at Wadzanayi Stadium yesterday.

The emphatic victory not only handed the hosts their first home win of the season, but likely secured the future of coach Mandla Mpofu.

Entering the fixture under a dark cloud following a three-match winless streak, Mpofu saw the pressure evaporate during a whirlwind first-half display.

The home side’s relentless energy saw them race into a three-goal lead before the interval, leaving the visitors shell-shocked.

The tone was set as early as the eigth minute.

Captain Webster Tafa led from the front, earning a penalty after being tripped by McKinnon Mushore. Tafa dusted himself off and coolly sent goalkeeper Raphael Pitisi the wrong way to ignite the home crowd.

However, the afternoon belonged to Masina.

In the 17th minute, the striker showcased his predatory instincts. Latching onto a pass from striking partner Tapiwa Mandinyenya during a lightning counter-attack, Masina outpaced two markers before slotting a composed low shot past Pitisi.

While FC Platinum dominated possession, with Namibian import Abram Tjahikika testing William Thole twice, they lacked a cutting edge. Simba Bhora, by contrast, were lethal.

In first-half stoppage time, Masina produced a moment of pure perseverance.

Chasing down a high ball that seemed destined for the keeper, he muscled his marker off the ball, rounded the stranded Pitisi, and rolled the ball into an empty net.

"The hunger and the fighting spirit I saw today was just unbelievable," a jubilant Mpofu said after the match. "I give credit to the boys and our supporters who have been so patient. We want to make this place a fortress."

For FC Platinum coach Joel Luphahla, it was a miserable return to the club he led last season. The former Warriors striker did not hold back in his post-match assessment, publicly slandering his players for a perceived lack of determination.

The second half was a more disciplined affair as Simba Bhora shifted into game-management mode. They missed a golden opportunity to make it four with ten minutes remaining when substitute Ephraim Gwekwerere was hacked down in the box on his debut to earn the team a second penalty.

Tafa stepped up but saw his effort clip the crossbar and fly over.

Despite the missed spot-kick, the damage was done.
