Zim 4x400m relay team wins World Champs spot

Zimbabwe’s Men’s 4x400m relay team

Zimbabwe’s Men’s 4x400m relay team made history at the World Relays Gaborone 2026, shattering the national record to secure a spot World Relays Final and automatic qualification for the World Athletics Championships.

Running in Heat 2 from Lane 8, the quartet of Dennis Hove, Leeford Zuze, Gerren Muwishi, and Thandazani Ndlovu clocked a blistering 2:59:01.

This landmark performance placed them third in their heat and sixth fastest overall, ahead of global powerhouses like Qatar and Belgium.

Zimbabwe trails only Australia, Botswana, South Africa, the Netherlands, and Portugal heading into the final this afternoon.

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) president Tendayi Tagara hailed the feat as a milestone for the sport.

"This is a defining moment for Zimbabwean athletics,”  Tagara said. “To break the national record, qualify for the World Relays Final, and secure a place at the World Championships is an extraordinary achievement.

"These athletes have shown the world that we belong at this level. This success reflects the hard work of our coaches and the entire athletics family."

The jump from a 3:03 average to 2:59:01 represents more than just a faster time; it is a psychological breakthrough. In international track, the sub-3:00 mark is the gateway to the global elite.

Zimbabwe has now officially entered finalist territory, moving within striking distance of the 2:57–2:58 Medal Contention Zone."

The record was the result of near-flawless tactical execution across all four legs. Dennis Hove provided the technical stability and positioning required in the opening leg, while Leeford Zuze delivered a powerful second leg to establish a competitive tempo. Gerren Muwishi maintained high intensity to keep the team in the front pack, and Thandazani Ndlovu anchored with authority, bringing the baton home to seal the historic time.

With their ticket to the World Championships already punched, the team is set to compete in the World Relays Final today.

Having proven they can compete with the world's best, the objective is now clear: consolidate their position among the global elite and push for an even faster time.

They are already guaranteed US$2 000 if they finish last while they can win US$40 000 if they win the competition.
