The Masvingo Annual Business and Investment Conference 2012 seeks to attract investors into sectors such as agriculture, the services sector and energy among others.
According to the conference’s co-ordinator, Angeline Mikiri, more than 50 people have so far confirmed participation for the September 28 meeting at Liz Inn in Masvingo.
“We want investors to come and establish businesses and industries in the province,” she said.
She said once there was meaningful investment in the various sectors of the economy, Masvingo would then grow as a town.
Since the inception of the inclusive government in 2009, various conferences have been held to attract investors into the country but Masvingo has largely remained in the shadows even though it boasts of minerals like diamonds and gold.
Mikiri said the growth of the town would help curb the exodus of school leavers to Harare in search of jobs.
Masvingo province’s growth is expected to be spurred by the completion of the Tokwe-Mukorsi dam next year, a move that would result in the expansion of irrigation of sugar plantations in the Lowveld.
The dam area is also expected to ultimately grow into a small town buoyed by the establishment of tourism and fishing activities around the water reservoir.
