
Lusitania Primary School’s Book Week became a centre stage for remarkable talent as 11-year-old Watidaishe Marongwe launched her debut illustrated book titled The KSG and The Party Spoiler in Harare recently.
The vibrant event which coincident with the school’s book week where children came dressed in their favourite book characters, underscored the power of nurturing creative arts in schools and the impact of mentorship on young potential.
Watidaishe’s debut book is a 105 paged illustrated storybook which follows the story of “The Kind Sister’s Gang — Mia, Kazy and Kate — navigating friendship, jealousy, and triumph, culminating into a suspenseful prom-night drama.
It’s themes of kindness, resilience and pursuing dreams resonate deeply with young learners who maybe in the process of discovering their passions.
In her speech at the school assembly launch,Watidaishe acknowledged that sketching initial ideas including drawings during her school pick-up times motivated her to continue writing until she had completed a full sketch storybook demonstrating how everyday moments could fuel artistic expression.
“It started with little sketches during waiting times”, she explained and I’m grateful to my mentor and publisher Mr. Sox for guiding me during the writing and publishing process.
Lusitania Primary School head of academics Patricia Gonde hailed the achievement as a “milestone” which perfectly aligned with the school’s culture of promoting creative arts, reading and storytelling.
Gonde stated: “We are incredibly proud and thank Watidaishe for donating some copies of her book to our school library” and added that Watida’s latest milestone would inspire other students in the near future.
