From Wellington Toni in Mehdani, Sudan EDWARD Sadomba is a hero in Zimbabwe as well as in Sudan.

The player was on hand to give the Zimbabwe Warriors a hearty hug and an MTN line on arrival at Khartoum International Airport last Thursday. The Zimbabweans arrived at the same day as the Democratic Republic of Congo whose supporters based in Sudan broke into song and dance when the team touched down.

That was until somebody from the DRC supporters spotted Sadomba and immediately dumped their team and started chanting Sadomba, Sadomba, Sadomba (pronounced Sadumba here).

The scores of journalists waiting outside dumped the Zimbabwe and DRC teams and swamped Sadomba.

One could tell that Sadomba is a hero in Sudan as just about everyone wanted to talk to him and get a picture.

The photographers went crazy and the cameras flashed to no end as they sought the latest pictures of the Zimbabwean.

Phone cameras also went into overdrive as supporters took turns to pose for pictures with Sadomba.

But the man took it in his stride as he is used to the attention and focused on giving some words of encouragement to the Warriors.

“I think the team will do very well in the competition. They have experienced players who have played in Chan before and they have teams in the Africa Champions League.

“I am confident and positive that they have a mission to achieve and they will do that.”

While Sadomba was giving interviews to journalists, the Zimbabwe Warriors sat patiently in their team bus and no journalist was interested in them.

It was just one alert scribe who approached the acting head coach Madinda Ndlovu after being alerted that he is the brother to the legendary former Warriors skipper Peter.

The 28-year-old Warriors striker, Sadomba, broke fresh ground by becoming the first Zimbabwean footballer to feature competitively in Sudan after signing for Al-Hilal in 2009.

Sadomba later accompanied the team to their hotel and promised to attend all the Warriors matches to give moral support
