Banyana Banyana trounce Zambia

BY JERMAIN HANGAZHA South Africa (2) 4Zambia        (1) 1FANTASTIC!. South Africa served a nice dish in the COSAFA Women Championships Group B opener at Rufaro yesterday.

The cracking game was a terrific advert for the region’s prestigious championships.

Banyana Banyana won the match in an impressive fashion with striker Noku Matlou grabbing a hatrick. Matlou was the first to register her name on the scoresheet after she converted from a penalty in the 19th minute.

The penalty awarded to South Africa by referee Martha Nyekanyeka from Malawi after Matlou was pushed by Zambian defender Mulayi Wilombe in the penalty box.

Banyana Banyana doubled their lead in the 27th minute goal due to an own by Mulayi Wilombe who beat goalie Miriam Katomanda. However, the Zambians’ marauding attacks eventually paid off in the 45th minute as Etas Banela notched in a goal after she was sent through by Mupopo Kabange.

Amanda Dlamini scored a classy goal for South Africa in the 53rd minuite after she hit the target straight from a corner kick.

Banyana Banyana continued to torment in the Zambia’s defence and Matlou scored her third goal in the 60th minute. Matlou`s goal came through the brilliance of Gabisile Hlumbane who reacted quickly to a Miriam Katomando`s clearance before squaring Matlou who made a superb finish.

South Africa showed attacking verve especially in the shape of Matlou. Her scoring exploits were also spotted in the last years Cosafa tournament when she scored an incredible 12 goals in five matches including a hatrick in the final against Angola, which they won.

She was also voted player of the tournament. South Africa are ranked first in the Sothern Africa  women`s teams and they won the past two editions.
