Celtic beat Highlanders to lift Winter Cup

BY OUR STAFF Bulawayo giants Highlanders fell 0-3 to Absa Premiership side Bloemfontein Celtic after a penalty shoot-out in the inaugural Ellis Park Sport Organisation Winter Cup (EPSOW) played in Johannesburg yesterday.

The two teams played a 3-3 draw during regulation time and had to settle matters through spot-kicks. Bosso missed their first two penalties while Celtic scored the first three to pocket the R200 000 prize money.

Highlanders head of delegation Tawengwa Hara said the match was attended by over 13 000 fans. However, the Highlanders fans outnumbered the colourful Bloemfontein Celtic supporters.

“The match was well-attended but the Highlanders supporters outshone Bloemfontein Celtic. It was like they were playing at home,” Hara said. He added both sides fielded full strength squads but Highlanders goalkeeper Lovemore Makwavarara failed to travel, as he did not have a passport. Bosso invited a guest player in goalkeeper Chenjerai Dube, who has played for Highlanders before but is now playing in the Botswana premiership.

Michelle Varner, events and promotions manager of the Cup said the World of Sports Winter Cup is set to become an annual Cup.

“We plan to have this as an annual event where teams from Africa play local teams. This is all about fostering relations with our African neighbours and we have started with Zimbabwe because we have a lot of Zimbabweans in South Africa,” Varner said.

Meanwhile in another development Black Leopards have signed Zimbabwean striker Kingston Nkatha on a two-year contract. Nkatha played for both Carara Kicks and Free State Stars before joining Leopards.

Former Warriors head coach Sunday Chidzambwa coaches Black Leopards. Jomo Cosmos has also signed another Zimbabwe-born player Alois Ngwerume for the 2011/12 season. Ngwerume was released by Moroka Swallows. Ngwerume made headlines playing for social side Highdon Raylton a few years ago before Dynamos signed him.
