The event will run from August 11-16 in Brisbane. Chirombe is set to join other top-class umpires from different parts of the world in Brisbane a few weeks earlier where they will attend workshops before the prestigious tournament commences.
“Owen Chirombe will travel to Brisbane a few weeks earlier prior to the tournament in-order to attend workshops, pre-series meetings and officiate warm-up matches,” read a statement by the Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC).
ZC head media and communications manager Shingai Rhuhwaya said the appointment of Chirombe to officiate at the World Cup was evidence the ICC had continued to have faith in administrators the country has produced.
“This invitation attests to the calibre of sports administrators that Zimbabwe is able to produce. We are proud of Chirombe and have confidence that he will represent us during the tournament,” said Rhuhwaya.
Chirombe took up umpiring as a fulltime job in 2009 and has officiated at a number of overseas tournaments which include the 2005 Under-19 Afro-Asia Cup in Sharjah, India and the Under-19 2009-10 World Cup which was held in New Zealand.
