Glen Querl doubtful for Zimbabwe selection

BY MICHAEL MADYIRAALL-rounder Glenn Querl’s inclusion in the Zimbabwean A cricket squad to face South Africa and Sri Lanka A sides in the limited overs tri-series could be a nullity as his contract with his English club Unicorns does not permit any full-time contract with another team.

Querl, who played for Tuskers in the domestic league last season, is currently in England where he is with Unicorns who specifically play in the Clydesdale Bank 40 limited overs competition.

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) convener of selectors, Givemore Makoni, said the national team takes precedence when a player is selected.

“We have talked to him (Querl) together with all other players regarding their selection for the A side,” said Makoni.

“I do not know the terms and conditions of his contract with his club but I am aware that he should not play for another team. However, in light of this, the national team takes precedence. Now, it is up to the player to decide whether he wants to play for the country because right now he does not have a contract with us.”

A close family member however sang a different tune, saying ZC was yet to formally contact the 24-year-old cricketer about his call-up.

“He is contracted to his club in the UK. His contract does not allow him to sign a contract with any other team. ZC is yet to contact him in connection with this but someone from Tuskers called me and I suggested that they phone him,” said the family member.

“I am sure he would like to be here and play for his country, but violating the contract that he has with his club will not be recommendable.

“Even us as his family would love to watch him playing for his country because it is an honour to be called for national duty, but the problem is that the contract at his club does not allow him to do so,” she said.

Querl has represented the country’s junior national teams where he took part in the Zimbabwe Afro-Asia Under-19 Cup in 2005 and the Under-19 World Cup the following year.

Meanwhile, Pakistan-born batsman Sikandar Raza Butt is yet to obtain a Zimbabwean passport although he is eligible for the Zimbabwe A squad by virtue of having secured a Zimbabwe national identity card.

Makoni said Butt’s passport papers were currently being processed by the passport offices and was hopeful he would obtain it soon.
