Siphiwe Tshabalala was the only player to score from the spot for South Africa in a match which saw the host nation take the lead through Tokelo Rantie. However,  his goal was cancelled out by Seydou Keita early in the second half.

Mali kept their nerve in the shootout, scoring all three of their attempts.

South Africa started the match like a house on fire, putting Mali under pressure and getting the home crowd excited right from the onset.

The match went into extra time and Mali kept it very tight at the back while there were bodies being thrown on the line by both teams to make sure nobody made a mistake in the extra 30 minutes of play.

Mali kept their nerve in the penalty shootout as South Africa buckled under the pressure and saw three penalty attempts go amiss. After extra time, Mali won 3-1 on penalties.
