Chicken Inn were the eventual winners of this year’s edition, beating CAPS United 3-2 in the final.

On the road to the final, Chicken Inn beat Monomotapa 2-1, while CAPS United knocked out FC Platinum 5-4 via a penalty shoot-out. The two had played a one-all draw in regulation time.

According to sources from the giant network provider, the sponsors are expecting much improved proceeds from this year’s addition compared to what they got from the first two editions.

“Changing the format for the competition on its own was a way of trying to improve our proceeds. Imagine votes exceeding 100 000; and if you calculate that with 20 cents per SMS, it will give you a large sum of money before we even start talking of gate takings,” said a source from NetOne.

He added that the idea of increasing the number of teams in this particular season opener tournament was also aimed at boosting revenue inflows.

“Remember we used to have only two teams taking part in this tournament in a one legged match. But this time around we managed to increase the number of teams to four, whereby we had three matches that were played over two days at the same venue, but this time out of Harare. In addition to that, fans had to pay separately to watch all the three matches with the final attracting an overwhelming crowd,” added the source.

This will improve the proceeds that are going to be dispatched to charitable organisations that would be selected in the near future.

Recently, NetOne dispatched proceeds of the last edition to 14 charitable organisations. To make it a more beneficial exercise, the network provider poured money into different projects that were identified for all the 14 homes, with the chicken breeding project in which they partnered Irvine’s topping the charts.
