REGISTRATION for the annual Old Mutual 10 km race has begun.

The organisers of that race, who last week confirmed November 24 as the big day for the event, said the registration for all the athletes who would want to take part in the race is now on.

Bulawayo Athletics Board secretary general Dailes Bingadadi confirmed the latest developments.

“We had a meeting with the sponsors of the event and everything is now in place. Athletes can now register for the race anytime.

Athletes can either visit Nkulumane Complex Old Mutual or come to see me for registration. As usual the registration exercise will be closed a day before the race,” she said.

While the race has been always called “Old Mutual 10 kilometre race”, this year’s edition will see the five kilometre race category being introduced.

“We had suggestions from many people about the five kilometre race for primary schools athletes. After having a meeting with the sponsors we came to a conclusion that this year’s edition will have a five kilometre race that will not only cater for primary athletes, but also for those who feel that they cannot afford to take part in the 10 kilometre race,” Bingadadi said.

Last year’s race which excluded primary school athletes saw over 250 athletes taking part.

Olympian Wirimayi Juwawo won the senior men’s race with a record of 29 minutes 50, 3 seconds, while South Africa-based Rutendo Nyahora came first in the women’s category.

Bingadadi said they are expecting a good turnout of athletes.

“We are expecting a good turnout considering that this might be the second from last race we have for this year here in Bulawayo. We are now getting into festive season, so athletes would obviously want to wrap the year with something in their hands.”

However, Bingadadi could not reveal the sponsorship packages.
