Silas Songani survives dreaded chop

ZIMBABWE international winger Silas Songani is delighted to have played a part in helping his Danish club Sonderjyske avoid relegation.

Songani joined the club in January when they were at the foot of the Superliga but they managed to escape demotion last weekend following a 3-0 away win over troubled AGF Aarhus.

As Sonderjyske spent the better part of the season at the basement, survival hopes were tricky but the Aarhus victory assured them safety.
The 25-year-old former Harare City man made nine appearances of which six were starts and contributed just a goal in the battle for maintaining top-flight football status.

His season ended prematurely due to a hamstring injury which forced him to miss the Aarhus match and will also see him sitting out today’s last game of the season against FC Midtjylland at Sydbank Park home.

“Surviving relegation was quite a challenge,” said Songani.

“Competition was tough but we managed to do the job. Coming from eight points behind was not a joke. Personally for me, it was not easy coming from Africa and marching straight into the first team but I did it and I am happy I contributed to the team’s cause.”

The winger has already set his eyes on next season where he wants to take Denmark by storm.

His club is former home to Quincy Antipas who is now at giants Brondby, who are at position four.

At least a draw for Brondby with Nordsjælland will help them book a Europa League spot.

While Songani has broken into European soccer, his heart bleeds for his ex-club Harare City who are struggling in the local Premier Soccer League (PSL).
City are at the PSL basement with just one win from seven games.

“The guys should just keep their heads high,” said Songani.

“They will get it right if they believe in themselves. I am sure the first game they won will launch them to more positive results. Last season we worked very hard and that is why we almost won the league title. We worked as a unit and played for each other.”
