ZPC Kariba asserted themselves as serious title contenders after dismissing visiting Shabanie Mine at Gwanzura yesterday.

The league debutants are now at the top of the log standings courtesy of a goal difference after Dynamos edged Highlanders 1-0 at Barbourfields yesterday.

ZPC Kariba coach Saul Chaminuka proved his tactical acumen as substitutes Philip Makanje and Norest Mukwezvaramba scored for his side while Pride Tarirenyika also scored for ZPC.

Shooting at the top of the log, ZPC Kariba are now a concern for Highlanders and Dynamos.

“We are just specialising our normal football. Nothing special can be said about us losing,” Shabanie Mine coach John Phiri said. “We played well especially in the first half but we lost the plot after the breather. There is still time to recover and we will do that.”

A drab first afternoon characterised the match with Artwell Nyamuwa closely missing target for ZPC Kariba.

Daniel Chakupe almost opened the scoring for ZPC Kariba but his shot went wide.

Makanje shot from the edge of the box to thrust ahead ZPC Kariba. Tafirenyika was back to grab the second of the afternoon beating advancing Shabanie Mine goalkeeper London Zulu.

Mukwezvaramba free kick final made it difficult for Shabanie Mine’s come back.
