It doesn’t matter how, but CAPS United are in seventh heaven after labouring to a controversial 1-0 win over an unlucky Black Rhinos at Rimuka yesterday.

The win took the Green Machine to second position on the log table, a point behind log leaders DeMbare who will be in action this afternoon.

A contentious first-half injury time penalty, coolly converted by Moses Muchenje, was enough to earn CAPS United their first set of three points following consecutive frustrating nil all draws against Bantu Rovers and How Mine respectively.

The victory effectively quelled dissenting voices that were baying for coach Taurai Mangwiro’s head.

The match kicked in a frantic pace with CAPS United taking initiative as Tendai Samanja blazed a promising free kick into no man’s land after just three minutes.

Soon it was Black Rhinos’ turn to strike with exciting winger Brian Muzondiwa going on a mazy run on the near side rounding his marker before releasing an exquisite square ball, only for Fredrick Marowa to poke the ball wide from eight yards out with Tafadzwa Dube in goals a beaten man.

Black Rhinos, who were now dictating the pace, were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty in the 17th minute when CAPS United captain Tapiwa Kumbuyani hacked down Muzondiwa seemingly in the box. Referee Munyaradzi Majoni, who had a bad day in office, awarded a free kick on the edge of the box.

A minute into first-half injury time, Mangwiro’s men nosed ahead, albeit in controversial circumstances.

A Rhinos defender cleanly tackled Ishmael Thundwa who then went to ground and to the fury of Rhinos players, Majoni pointed to the spot and Muchenje scored from the resultant spot kick.

In the second half Jostein Mathuthu’s charges went all out to restore parity. Livewire substitute Lot Chiwunga thought he had gained a point for his team, only to be flagged offside in the 90th minute.

CAPS United hung on for maximum points.
