ZPC Kariba dropped points again yesterday in their Premier Soccer League campaign when they were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly-placed visiting Dongo Sawmills at Gwanzura.

The league debutants drew first blood through Martin Nyanzira six minutes into the contest before ZPC Kariba clawed back through Artwell Nyamiwa 17 minutes later.

It was ZPC’s second draw of the season after they surrendered another two points in the 3-3 draw with Hwange in their second match of the season.

They remain fifth, with eight points and a game in hand, while winless Dongo are still stuck at second from bottom with just two points. It was an afternoon ZPC Kariba spent without head coach Saul Chaminuka who is in Cameroon with the Young Warriors leaving his assistant Godfrey Tamirepi to hold fort.

“Obviously, we would have wanted to pick maximum points but I cannot complain about a draw. We became desperate especially towards the end of the match and we rushed things a bit and failed to score. But I am happy we played well,” said Tamirepi.

After the final whistle, the visitors celebrated as if they had emphatically claimed victory, but coach Shadreck Magurasave said they wanted all points on offer.

“We wanted to win this match and I am not too happy we settled for a draw. But a point is better though. We need to start picking up points if we are to make an impression,” he said.

The afternoon began indicating an easy stroll for ZPC Kariba when five minutes into the match Nyamiwa headed just over the bar a Stephen Sheshe cross from the right.

But Dongo stunned the hosts a minute later when Nyanzira broke loose to slot past Wilson Muchenje in goals for ZPC. The 2014 league runners-up attempted to come back with Raphael Manuvire shooting just wide and the pressure for an equaliser nearly gifted Dongo another goal as Nyanzira took advantage of poor communication between Muchenje and George Magariro but shot wide. Nyamiwa hit back for ZPC by coolly taping in a Dexter Phiri cross.
