CLIVE Augusto announced his arrival at Chicken Inn with a stellar performance, notching a brace for the GameCocks to fly past ZPC Kariba in their first Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Luveve Stadium yesterday.

The former Ngezi Platinum Stars forward opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, tapping in a cross from defender Guide Goddard to beat ZPC Kariba goalkeeper Tendai Hove.

He completed his brace in the 63rd minute after blasting the ball past Hove from inside the penalty box after he was sent through by another new-signing Sipho Ndlovu.

Simon Munawa then struck six minutes before the final whistle after being set up by substitute Brett Amidu who weaved past a number of ZPC Kariba players a few minutes after he was introduced.

ZPC Kariba got their facesaver through Nigel Makumbe, two minutes before full time in a game that saw the first red card of the season when Ian Nekati was given his marching orders by referee Hardley Ndazo in the 66th minute for a crude tackle on Augusto, who gave the ZPC Kariba defenders a torrid time.

Augusto was replaced by Amidu in the 81st minute after ensuring Chicken Inn got maximum points and put a smile on coach Joey Antipas’ (pictured) face.

“That is why we brought him (Augusto) here because he gets the goals. He is a strong player and it’s very positive. He has good pace and power,” Antipas said.

He said it was a good start for Chicken Inn, but there was still work to be done moving forward.

“It was important to start the season on a high. There is still a lot of work to be done as we try to find the right combinations. We did very well against a resilient ZPC who beat us here last year. A lapse in concentration made us concede that goal,” Antipas said.

His counterpart Godfrey Tamirepi blamed the defeat on inept defending.

“We had a slow start and our defending was terrible. We lost to a team that was not in the game but just scored goals. It was not a good day in the office,” Tamirepi said.
