GOLFER Robbie Vas is basking in the limelight after winning the Seniors Nationals Championship 2025, which took place at the Royal Harare Golf Club early this month.
The notable achievement comes barely a few months after Vas won the Mashonaland Seniors Championships, showcasing his consistent skill on the course.
The three-day tournament, which took place from June 1 to 3, had a field of 102 players drawn from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Botswana and South Africa.
The golfers were grouped into four categories — cadets, seniors, veterans, and the methuselahs, each with their own unique challenges and opportunities.
Vas took the overall win with a gross score of 83 on day one and an impressive 78 on day two, demonstrating his mastery of the course.
His consistent play and strategic approach allowed him to navigate the Royal Harare Golf Club’s challenging layout with ease.
The tournament kicked off with the Austin Putter competition, which was won by Ivan Johnson and his partner Steven Frampton with 46 points overall. This competition tested the players’ putting skills, a crucial aspect of golf that can make or break a player's game.
Vas’s victory in the main tournament was a testament to his well-rounded skills, from driving to putting.

Speaking to Sports Hub, Vas attributed his win to the good condition of the Royal Harare Golf Club.
“I am very happy to have won this tournament, and I am grateful to the organising committee who gave us game time. The competition was tough, but I managed to do well during the three days. The course was in pristine condition, which allowed me to focus on my game without worrying about the terrain.”
“I would like to thank Royal Harare’s general manager of the club Ian Mathieson, golf director Simon Murungweni and staff for keeping the course in pristine condition, the reason why the Zim Open has always played here over the past years,” he said.
Looking into the future, Vas says that as he is growing older, he wants to “mature like wine”, which gets better with age. A mindset, which reflects his confidence in his abilities and his commitment to continuous improvement.
The Seniors Nationals Championship is an annual event that is played throughout the country and is rotated among Harare, Kwekwe, Bulawayo, and Triangle. This rotation allows different regions to host top-level golf competitions, promoting the sport across Zimbabwe.
Seniors Nationals Championship Chairman Ray Mlotshwa presided over the award ceremony for the tournament, congratulating Vas on his win.
