Gems outshine Kenya in netball friendlies

THE Nedbank-sponsored Zimbabwe Netball team made an emphatic return to the court with a 2-0 win over the visiting Kenyan national team in friendlies that ended at Queen Elizabeth Girls School in Harare yesterday.

The games served as preparatory matches for the impending Celtic Cup and Africa Cup. Zimbabwe drew first blood, winning the first tie 54-28 on Wednesday. They followed that up with a 58-37 victory in the second and final encounter yesterday.

The games, which drew large crowds, saw players like goal attack Nicole Muzanenhamo, goal defender Elizabeth Mushore, and the returning wing defender Claris Kwaramba, Gems' stand-in captain, shining brighter among the other shining gems.

Next stop is Malawi; the Zimbabwe Netball Association wants to bring the African powerhouse down to Harare for some high-profile bilateral friendlies before the year draws to a close.

Zina president Leticia Chipandu was happy to host Kenya, describing the games as competitive, well-organised, and played in great spirit, reflecting the strength and potential of netball in the region.

"The atmosphere at the Queen Elizabeth Grounds was electric. The support from the fans was overwhelming, and the energy they brought to the court created a vibrant and uplifting environment for the players," Chipandu said.

"Their presence reminded us why we continue to invest in this sport; it unites us, inspires us, and brings out the best in our athletes."

Apart from player empowerment through game-time, the netball supremo said that the games also offered valuable lessons from an organisational point of view.

"We've strengthened our capacity, sharpened our logistics, and proved that Zimbabwe is ready to host more regional teams," she added.

"Our ability to deliver high-quality matches both on and off the court shows our growing strength as a netball nation."

She paid homage to the Kenyan side for participating in the games, the City of Harare, Sports and Recreation Commission, Ministry of Sport, and the government of Zimbabwe for the support rendered.

"Together we've proven that with collaboration, passion, and proper planning, Zimbabwe can continue to shine in the world of netball," added Chipandu.

"The players gained match fitness, built chemistry, and gained confidence, all of which will be key as they represent Zimbabwe on the continental stage."
