In an interesting reversal barely 24 hours after announcing their withdrawal, the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) has confirmed the Under-21 Women’s Hockey Team will indeed participate in the upcoming FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile.
The dramatic change of fortune follows a critical, last-minute financial intervention by the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
The country was left disheartened on Friday when HAZ president, Grant Campbell, confirmed the team’s withdrawal. The official reason cited was crippling financial constraints, despite the young women having secured their spot by placing third at the Junior Africa Cup in Namibia in April.
Campbell's initial letter to the team stated the decision followed an extensive deliberation and comprehensive assessment of all possible avenues.
However, the team’s World Cup dream was salvaged yesterday. The Hockey Association of Zimbabwe swiftly released a statement, crediting the government for stepping in to cover the costs.
The HAZ press release yesterday confirmed the team's restored status under the heading: HAZ confirms Zimbabwe U21 Women's Hockey team to participate in 2025 Junior World Cup.
The association was effusive in its gratitude, extensively quoting the development.
"The Hockey Association of Zimbabwe is delighted to confirm that the Zimbabwe Under-21 women's hockey team will be participating in the upcoming FIH Junior World Cup, scheduled to take place in Santiago, Chile, in December 2025."

"This exciting development follows the valued intervention and support of the Ministry of Sport, Arts, Recreation and Culture whose guidance and assistance have ensured that Zimbabwe's young women will have the opportunity to represent the nation on the world stage."
HAZ continued to laud the government’s commitment.
"HAZ extends its sincere gratitude to the Honourable minister and the ministry for their continued commitment to the growth and development of hockey in Zimbabwe. Their involvement has made it possible for the players, coaches, and management team to continue their preparations with renewed confidence and national pride."
The statement concluded with a passionate call to all supporters: "HAZ calls upon all stakeholders, partners, and supporters to rally behind the team as they embark on this exciting journey to represent Zimbabwe with pride and excellence."
The sudden injection of government funds ensures that the team’s qualification efforts will pay off, allowing them to compete against the world's best in December.
The forthcoming FIH Junior World Cup, is scheduled to be held in from December 1 to 13, 2025.
