DeMbare eyes top spot in FC Platinum clash

Dynamos coach Genesis Mangombe emphasized the importance of the home crowd in their pursuit of the top spot.

Inform Harare giants Dynamos have a golden opportunity to seize control of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League race if they managed to collect maximum points against FC Platinum at Rufaro Stadium this afternoon.

Dynamos enter the matchday in fourth place with 14 points, but the door to the summit has been flung wide open. Log leaders CAPS United were held to a draw by Hunters yesterday, moving them to 16 points.

Ngezi Platinum Stars also dropped points in a home draw against Triangle United to sit in third with 15 points, trailing second-placed Hardrock on goal difference.

For DeMbare, the mission is simple: a victory this afternoon would catapult them to 17 points, leapfrogging the top three to claim first place after seven matches.

Despite the momentum, history suggests a tactical chess match. In 26 previous league meetings, FC Platinum holds a slight edge with 10 victories to Dynamos’ eight, with eight draws.

The last 10 encounters have been remarkably balanced, yielding two wins for each side and six draws.

Goals remain at a premium in this fixture. The last 10 matches have produced just seven goals—an average of 0.7 goals per game.

Nearly half of that tally came from FC Platinum’s 3–0 win in Zvishavane last season, whereas the return leg at Rufaro ended in a 0–0 stalemate.

Dynamos are currently the league's form side, boasting four wins and two draws. In contrast, Pure Platinum Play has struggled for consistency with two wins, three draws, and one defeat.

Furthermore, the visitors face a daunting psychological barrier; they have not won a league match against Dynamos in Harare since May 2018—a winless streak in the capital spanning eight years.

FC Platinum coach Joel Luphahla is wary of the atmosphere awaiting his side at a resurgent Rufaro.

“I think we have a massive game in our hands. When Dynamos are playing well, you know that they are going to fill up Rufaro,” Luphahla noted. “These are the atmospheres that you want to prevail in, but it makes it a difficult game because they have lost a game.”

Dynamos coach Genesis Mangombe emphasized the importance of the home crowd in their pursuit of the top spot.

“At the moment, we are very happy and the supporters are really playing a pivotal role in attaining the results,” Mangombe said.

“We encourage them to come in their numbers on Sunday. Maybe they also need to understand that some of the new boys haven’t gelled in very well, so they need to be patient. It’s only a matter of time that they will adjust to the demands of Dynamos.”

Kickoff set for 3:00 pm.
