Embassy of India leads in global yoga celebrations

An International Day of Yoga curtain raiser organised by the Embassy of India in association with Young Africa, Chitungwiza recently

The 11th International Day of Yoga, celebrated globally June 21, is being celebrated under the theme, Yoga for One Earth, One Health.

Yoga strengthens the body, calms the mind and fosters a heightened sense of awareness and responsibility in daily life.

This mindfulness allows one to choose healthier and more sustainable lifestyles.

In caring for ourselves, we begin to care for the Earth, reflecting the enduring Indian ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family.

Rooted in ancient Indian wisdom, Yoga goes far beyond just physical movement. It is a universal science of inner balance and holistic well-being.

At a time when stress, lifestyle diseases, and mental health challenges are on the rise, Yoga offers a steady, time-tested path that helps us find calm within ourselves and live more peacefully with those around us.

This year marks over a decade since the United Nations adopted India’s proposal to designate June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

This 11th edition offers an opportunity to reflect on how Yoga has grown into a global force for well-being, touching people across age groups, geographies and walks of life.

It has also been a source of inner strength and a bridge of solidarity, especially during global crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

In marking this year’s International Day of Yoga, Embassy of India organised three curtain raiser events — one in association with Dzikwa Trust Fund on May 17; second at Chitungwiza in association with Young Africa, Chitungwiza on May 23 and the other in Epworth in association with Young Africa, Epworth on May 30.

Embassy of India will be celebrating International Day of Yoga at Academy of Cricket Excellence in Bulawayo today at 8:30am; Rusape Hindu Society Hall in Rusape on Tuesday at 6:30pm; Hillcrest College in Mutare on Wednesday at 3pm; The Riverside Venue in Victoria Falls on June 15 at 8:30am; India House, Harare (25, Piers Road, Borrowdale) on June 22 at 8:30am.

The ancient wisdom of Yoga has shown its relevance today connecting humanity across the globe. India has showcased the multifaceted benefits of Yoga, including through joint scientific research, exchanges of traditional knowledge, and innovative wellness initiatives grounded in Yoga.

Ambassador of India Bramha Kumar encourages the community to participate in the celebrations to reaffirm our shared commitment to building a healthier, more peaceful and sustainable future for all.

He added that India was looking forward to work with Zimbabwe to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of traditional knowledge, holistic well-being and preventive health care through establishing AYUSH chair in an identified Zimbabwean university.
