Zimbabwe’s longest-running festival of urban culture, the Shoko Festival, is set to host a groundbreaking performance by South African hip-hop legend-turned amapiano sensation Reason, also know as Sizwe Alakine. He will headline the much-anticipated Mash Up Night at Harare Gardens on Friday, September 26.
A winner of a South African Music Award (Sama), Reason has earned a reputation as one of Mzansi’s most respected hip-hop artists. He is also a pioneering force in the amapiano movement. His performance at the festival, billed as a Hip-Hop vs Amapiano Sound Clash, will be a unique experience for the audience. Reason promises to take everyone on a musical journey through both his hip-hop roots and his contemporary amapiano mastery. This dual-genre showcase highlights the artist's evolution, new sound, and powerful, socially conscious lyrics.
According to Shoko Festival Director Samm Farai Monro, also known as Comrade Fatso, Reason's performance embodies what this year's festival is all about: building a legacy for urban culture. "He’s a veteran of South African hip hop who has been a key player on the scene for two decades and remains hugely influential with his recent shift to Amapiano," said Monro.
Reason's performance is part of a dynamic Mash Up Night lineup that also includes UK rapper OneDa, Zim hip-hop star Sane Wav, and legendary producer Take Fizzo. Fizzo will headline with a showcase of his greatest hits, featuring live performances by urban grooves pioneers.
The festival’s commitment to collaboration extends beyond the main stage. Kenyan spoken word artist Mufasa will perform with the Arundel School Music Department’s Jazz Band, Choir, and Orchestra. Additionally, Zimbabwean urban artists will perform new songs created during the Mashoko Tapes residency, a Shoko Festival-led initiative that brings together artists from different genres to create new work.
