Last minute sponsorship for Swaz

OWN CORRESPONDENT THE 2011 Soccer Star of the Year award does not have a sponsor as the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority only came in as a stop-gap measure to bankroll the 2010 awards in order to avoid embarrassment.

Zimbabwe Tourism Authority chief executive officer Karikoga Kaseke said his organisation had to come on board at the last minute because it would have been embarrassing for the gala not to be held after having invited a high profile Africa footballer, Kalusha Bwalya to be the guest of honour.

The Sports Writers Association of Zimbabwe (Swaz) had invited the Zambian football legend for the 2010 award ceremony but on the day of the gala found themselves with no money for the event to take place.

Kaseke said he would talk to his colleagues in the corporate world for them to sponsor the awards this year, meaning the ZTA are not committed to the continued sponsorship of the awards.

Kaseke said the agreement between ZTA and Swaz was a last minute arrangement as the authority could not allow such an event to be cancelled off at the 11th hour.

Swaz has been battling to find a sponsor since the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe withdrew its sponsorship of the Premier Soccer League. In the past, the sponsors of the league sponsored the Soccer Star of the Year awards but the league currently does not have a sponsor.
