Zimbabwe...(20) 49Uganda…(7) 21RESURGENT Zimbabwe  Sables  moved in step further in their quest to winning the Victoria Cup when they defeated Uganda in a match at Hartsfield Grounds yesterday.

The win saw Zimbabwe making it three out of three in the triangular that also includes defending champions Kenya as they beat Uganda 25-15 in the first leg before seeing off the challenge of Kenya 42-24 last weekend.

Wing Gardner Nechironga and prop Denford Mutamangira planted two tries apiece while wing Tangai Nemadire, lock Fortune Chipendo and Cleopas Makotose contributed a try each.

Flyhalf Tich Makwanya converted two tries and two penalties while Nechironga was also good with the foot as he converted two tries to see the Sables cementing their lead at the top of the three team log.

The Cranes of Uganda planted three tries through Alex Mubiru, Timothy Kabonero and Michael Hokorachi. Flyhalf Deno Kizza converted all the three tries.The Sables have now accrued 14 points as they got a bonus point yesterday after managing to plant more than four tries.

Their next match is away to Nairobi, Kenya for the return leg of the tournament on July 23 and they go into the second leg having defeated the Kenyans 42-24 in the first leg.

The Sables team manager Noddy Kanyangarara praised the team’s performance, but said they need to improve on their ball retention.

“Our forwards played very well and we took our chances. We just have to improve on those areas that we are strong at. Our backline did not play that well and we have to improve on that,” he said.
