Zim karate team impress in S Africa

By Our staff The Kimura Shukokai Zimbabwe, an affiliate of the Zimbabwe Karate Union won 12 medals in Polokwane Karate Championships held in South Africa last weekend. The team brought home 12 medas, four gold, four silver and four bronze. Aaron Rungani struck gold twice in the 68kg Kumite and in the Individual Kata categories while Wesley Gondo won gold in the 65kg Kumite category. Scott Weale also won gold in the 49kg Kumite category. The silver medals came from Weale in the Individual Kata, Simbarashe Munemi in the 42kg Kumite, Gondo in the Individual Kata and Simba Chikutu in the 75kg Kumite categories. Tinashe Mafukidze won bronze twice, in the 69kg Kumite and Indivudual Kumite with Innocent Ntini winning another bronze in the 49kg Kumite. Chukutu added another bronze from the Individual Open Kata. The association had sent a 10-member delegation to take part in the karate competitions. The 10 participants were drawn from the Prince Edward School dojo. The team also included instructor, former ZKU president, Sensei Simba Chikutu. Meanwhile, the Japanese Ambassador Karate Cup that had been initially penciled for yesterday was postponed to September 8. The dates have been moved to enable Yonezo Fukuda, the Japanese ambassador, to attend the occasion.
