It was a reprieve for coach Taurai Mangwiro, who made an early substitution in the first half, bringing in veteran Russell Madamombe in the 33rd minute and destabilising the Bulawayo City youthful midfield duo of Kelvin Madzongwe and Ransome Pavari.

City opened the account in the 22nd minute through Mkhululi Moyo, who made a solo run beating two Triangle defenders on the right before packing a shot from inside the penalty box to beat goalkeeper Ronald Mudimu.

The hosts continued to terrorise Triangle before Madamombe was brought in, with the last 15 minutes of the first half belonging to the lowveld-based side.

And they were rewarded four minutes into the second half when striker James Chivasa received a long clearance from the back, encroached the Bulawayo City goal area before hammering the equaliser.

In the 63rd minute with Triangle continuously bombarding Bulawayo City, the hosts’ goalkeeper Liberty Chirava spilled an effort by overlapping right-back Ralph Kawondera and substitute Lameck Nhamo pounced on and grabbed the winner from close range.

Mangwiro was excited, saying he has to continue winning especially at home and assure Triangle followers that he is the right man for the job.

“It was a good overall performance from the boys. We were on the back foot when the game started and were jittery. We regrouped and we were organised in the last 10 minutes of the first half and coming into the second half. Bulawayo City gave a fight but tough luck to them. We needed this one to convince everyone that we know what we are doing. I am happy we won today,” Mangwiro said.

Bulawayo City coach Mandla Mpofu acknowledged the introduction of Madamombe by Triangle was the turning point of the match.

“It was a disappointing show. We wanted to take advantage of a team that has not been playing well of late but the bringing in of Russell by Triangle changed a lot of things. We are, however, not demoralised. Its not the end of the world,” Mpofu said.
