ZPC Kariba continued its resurgence after winning their third straight game following a 2-1 victory over Harare City at Nyamhunga Stadium yesterday.

The home side took the lead in the 26th minute courtesy of a penalty by Godknows Mangani after the referee Nomore Musundire pointed to the spot for a foul on big striker Francisco Zekumbawire.

ZPC Kariba could have increased the lead, but a long-range shot by Never Tigere moments later was parried back into play by Harare City keeper Tatenda Munditi and cleared out of danger.

The electricity men doubled the scoreline in the 58th minute when Zekumbawire — the best player in the field — outpaced his marker on the right flank before squeezing his shot between the keeper and the near post, much to the amazement of the fans.

Harare City tried hard to get back into the game, but were let down by their strikers Grey Kufandada and William Munondo who took turns to miss chances that came their way.

However, the visitors got their consolation goal in added time when Martin Vengesai took advantage of sloppy marking by ZPC defenders in the box, but the damage had already been done.

ZPC Kariba coach Sunday Chidzambwa said although he was not impressed by his team’s overall display, he was happy they still managed to collect the three points.

“We didn’t play very well, but the good thing is that we scored two goals. We managed to get the three points and to me, that is very important. Sometimes you play badly and lose while sometimes you play badly and win. In this case, we didn’t play very well, but we won,” said Chidzambwa.

Harare City coach Philani “Beefy” Ncube conceded that ZPC Kariba were the better team on the day.

“Playing away from home is not easy; they made good use of their home advantage. We cannot say it is the end of the world, we lost the game and we lost the battle, but we gave it our all and it happens in football. We will keep on fighting,” he said.
