BULAWAYO-BASED handball team Ajax has extended a begging bowl to well-wishers and prospective sponsors to ensure they remain in the country’s top flight league.

Ajax, which has its roots in Mpopoma suburb, is the only team from Bulawayo in the national league, which has made it very difficult for them to fulfill their fixtures.

Collen Nkomo, the chairman of the club, said the team has become the national favourites after winning the competition more than five times. However, he said has hit hard times and is appealing to companies and individuals, who can help them further develop talent in the community.

“As Ajax, we are a community-based team in Mpopoma suburb and we are open to everyone,” Nkomo said.

“We have been putting resources together through sacrifices from individuals and club members.”

Nkomo added that they should have represented the country in the regional and international competitions, but have failed to do that due to financial constraints.

The national league is set to begin next year in February and it is comprised of many well-resourced teams such as Manyame, Thornhill, Black Rhinos, Falcons, Harare City, Bindura University, University of Zimbabwe, Mutare City and Midlands State University among others.

The team was formed in 2013 and its home ground is Lukhanyiso Primary School.
