ZIMBABWEAN songstress Nkwali, born Nomathamsanqa Treatie Mkwananzi, has dedicated her second album titled Themba to her late father who passed away in 2018. The eight-track album was produced by Dumisani “Ramadu” Moyo of 10th District.

Her debut album titled Sithokozile was released in 2015.

“The name of the album is Themba, which is also my father’s name. He passed on in 2018 and it’s a dedication to him,” Nkwali told Standard Style.

“My father was a good person, humble and dedicated to his family. He was my best friend, my first love and pillar of my strength.”

She said her father’s death was a huge blow and described him as someone who was her rock.

“I realised that as a first born, I am grown up, the responsibility was now on my shoulders. I was now the head of the family,” she said.

“This is a man who was my rock. As someone who was always on tour for months overseas, he looked after my son.

“Arriving at home the first pont of call was my dad. We would sit down and he would ask me how my tour was, now when I get home I cry because he is no more.”

The musician-cum-actress said plans were afoot to launch the album in December and has released one of the tracks Uyimbokodo, which raises awareness on gender-based violence.

“I believe this track is powerful and will help women in abusive relationships to speak out, seek help and stop the abuse. My message to all the women out there is ‘don’t stand any form of abuse’” she said.

“I was abused in my early years in the entertainment industry. I was psychologically, emotionally and violently abused. I cannot say much at the moment, but it deeply affects me so much — only time will heal.”

However, she said the love of music, beauty of art and the connection with the people who love her music motivates her to keep going.

“I have always been a singer, songwriter, actress and also dance during my performances,” she added.
