Harare -Chivhu highway crash kills 27

Twenty-three victims lost their lives at the scene, whilst an additional two succumbed to their injuries upon admission to hospital.

At least 27 people have tragically died following a horrific head-on collision along the Harare-Chivhu highway last night. 

The catastrophic accident, which occurred at the 123-kilometre peg near the Makumimavi area, involved a commuter omnibus and a heavy haulage truck.

Twenty-three victims lost their lives at the scene, whilst an additional two succumbed to their injuries upon admission to hospital. 

Only two survivors, including the haulage truck driver, remain hospitalised in a critical condition.

In an official statement, Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs minister Itayi Ndudzo, expressed profound grief.

"It is with deep sadness that we advise you of a tragic accident that occurred last night... Our hearts are with the families of the deceased and the injured,” Ndudzo said.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Civil Protection Unit are currently onsite assisting with clearing the scene. Motorists using the highway are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution, especially around the Makumimavi area. The minister added that a full list of the deceased will be published once immediate families have been contacted. More to follow
