Makaya scoops top engineering award

Makaya’s journey began at the National University of Science and Technology where she graduated with a first-class honours in Civil and Water Engineering.

Rising engineering star Rudo Makaya has been honoured for her role in Civil and Water Engineering courtesy of the Dr Engineer T M Stevenson Innovation and Creativity Award at the Zimbabwe Institute of Engineering (ZIE) Awards held in the capital recently.

The young graduate engineer from Hydro Utilities Consulting Engineers received the award for her ground-breaking work on the Kamativi Tailing Storage Facility project, where she demonstrated exceptional technical skills and innovative problem solving.

“I’m deeply humbled by this recognition”, said Makaya.

“The achievement not only belonged to me, but to the entire team at Hydro Utilities Consulting and my mentors who had supported her growth.

“At Hydro Utilities, I have had the opportunity to work on diverse projects, including the design of a Tailings Storage Facility in Kamativi.

“Under the guidance of Engineer Michael Maphosa, I played an active role in designing tailings storage facilities.

“My contribution to this project, particularly in addressing geotechnical challenges, hydrological modeling, and environmental impact mitigation, was driven by an innovative and sustainable approach.”

Makaya’s journey began at the National University of Science and Technology where she graduated with a first-class honours in Civil and Water Engineering.

Her academic excellence was matched by her passion for water, sanitation and hygiene initiatives, which shaped her career trajectory.

Makaya said her innovative and sustainable approach to her work, driven by her passion for engineering and a desire to make positive impact had fuelled her energy to continuously stay up to date with industry trends.

Beyond her technical achievements, Makaya is committed to professional development and knowledge sharing.

She actively participates in engineering forums and mentors’ junior colleagues, embodying the award’s spirit of fostering innovation and creativity in the field.

“I’m motivated to continue pushing boundaries in engineering while inspiring other young professionals, especially women to pursue careers in STEM fields,” Makaya said.
