Dancehall star Winky D has shone a spotlight on the dangerous state of regional roads following an electrifying performance at the Zam-Zim Braai Fest in Lusaka, Zambia recently.

While the April 11 show was a success, the “Ninja President” used his message of appreciation to acknowledge the risks taken by fans who travelled from Zimbabwe.

“To every Gafa who crossed borders, braved local roads, and filled grounds with energy, you integrated and inspired an authentic reconnection as Zimbabwean fire wove through Lusaka’s welcoming embrace,” he said.

His remarks point to the hazardous 348-kilometre journey between Harare and Lusaka via the Harare-Chirundu Highway — a key regional route widely regarded as a “death trap.”

The road, a vital link along the North-South Corridor, is notorious for its steep descents, sharp curves and deteriorating surface, worsened by recent rains.

Sections near Karoi and Nyamakate are riddled with deep potholes that pose serious risks to motorists.

Heavy congestion from haulage trucks further compounds the danger, turning overtaking into a risky manoeuvre on narrow lanes.

The highway has a long history of fatal accidents, including head-on collisions and truck-related incidents, making it one of the most feared routes in southern Africa.

By highlighting the ordeal faced by travelling fans, Winky D once again blends music with subtle social commentary, drawing attention to a critical infrastructure challenge affecting thousands.
