ZIMBABWE’S biggest golf tournament this year will come in the form of the inaugural SAA Charity Classic, set to be an annual golf tournament whose primary objectives are to provide an international platform for local talent.

y>The event, the inaugural tournament of the Zimbabwe Pro-Am Tour that will also assist various charities, will be held over four days from October 12 to 15 – with the first three days being in pro-am format whereby three amateur players will team up with a professional.

The pro-am days will be hosted by Calltrol on October 12, Zimsun Leisure the next day and the title sponsors, South African Airways, will host the final pro-am day on October 14.

The final day, October 15, will be contested by professionals only.

The tournament will be held at the Borrowdale Brooke Golf and Country Club, one of the premier golf courses in Zimbabwe.

Professional golfers from South Africa, Botswana and Zambia are expected to compete against local professionals, including Zimbabwe’s top golfer Tongo Charamba who has recently won on the Sunshine Tour.

Playing alongside these top golfers from the region will be approximately 120 amateur players on each of the three pro-am days.

The professional golfers will compete for the John Painting Memorial Trophy as well as the biggest prize purse this year of $2 000 000 which is sponsored by South African Airways.

Tournament director Lee-Anne Wentzel has praised the support from the corporate sector that has taken the lead in the quest for golf development and assisting charities.

“The response has been fantastic and the event promises to be the biggest Zimbabwe has experienced in recent times,” said Wentzel.” — Staff Writer.
