Tinotenda Maposa’s magnificent five-wicket haul spearheaded a spirited fightback by Zimbabwe 'A' on the second day of the historic three-day match against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at Old Hararian Sports Club yesterday.
Maposa's brilliant spell of five for 37 helped bowl out the visitors for 298, giving the MCC a substantial first-innings lead of 106 runs.
The match had started on a difficult note for Zimbabwe 'A' on day one. After electing to bat, they were bundled out for a modest 192. The innings was rescued from complete collapse by Antum Naqvi, who played a gutsy knock of 68 from 105 balls.
Support came from Tafadzwa Tsiga (29), Tadiwanashe Marumani, and Tanunurwa Makoni both 23. The MCC, in their historic first visit to Zimbabwe since 1964/65, ended day one in a dominant position at 104/2 threatening to pile on a massive score.
Day two, however, belonged to Maposa. The pace bowler, who has been part of Zimbabwe’s recent international fixtures, ripped through the MCC middle and lower order, claiming the crucial wickets of top-order batsman Sam Atherton, and the well-set pair of Mike Frost (70) and Daniel da Costa. He later added the scalps of Simon Fernandes and Joseph Davies to complete his five-for.
The MCC innings were built on three strong contributions. Frost top-scored with a patient 78 from 209 deliveries, while Fernandes managed 71and Mike Frost 70. Maposa received excellent support from Vincent Masekesa, who took three wickets, and Takudzwa Chataira, who chipped in with two.
At the close of play, Zimbabwe 'A' were struggling again at 19/1, losing opener Innocent Kaia for seven. The 'A' side, featuring several players like Wessly Madhevere and Clive Madande, who are part of the next generation of Zimbabwean cricketers, now trail by 87 runs.
Tanunurwa Makoni (7) and night watchman Masekesa (0) will resume the innings this morning, hoping to batten down the hatches and turn the tide in this valuable test against quality opposition.
