Persistence begins to pay off for Karoi's Fun Killer

After years of grinding in Zimbabwe’s competitive music industry, Karoi-based musician Fun Killer is finally beginning to reap the rewards of persistence, with his music now receiving airplay on national radio stations and gaining wider recognition.

Born Evoce Zeremu, the versatile artiste has spent more than a decade chasing his dream while working tirelessly to put the small tobacco farming town of Karoi on Zimbabwe’s entertainment map.

Fun Killer said his musical journey began in 2011 when he started writing songs before recording his first track in 2015.

“I have always believed in my talent. Even when people did not know me, I kept pushing because music is my passion and I knew one day the breakthrough would come,” said Fun Killer.

The musician has collaborated with established artistes such as Romeo Gasa and worked with producers including Chill for Real and Simple Solid, slowly building his brand despite remaining largely underground for years.

His determination is now paying off, with his songs earning airplay on ZiFM Stereo and Platinum FM, formerly known as Nyaminyami FM.

However, Fun Killer believes his journey is only beginning.

“I am grateful that people are finally listening to my music, but I still want more recognition. My dream is to dominate the charts on stations like Radio Zimbabwe, National FM and Star FM, and also have my videos playing on national television,” he said.

The youthful artiste, who blends dancehall, Afro-pop, jazz, gospel and hip-hop, said he is working tirelessly in the studio to expand his catalogue and strengthen his brand.

So far, he has recorded more than 15 songs, including tracks such as Vaidzidzira, Vanondivenga, Chirungu PaCompany, Sweet, Mukwende, Chocolate, Hwemamera, Ndambakuudzwa and Takura.

Last week, Fun Killer released his second extended play (EP), a project he believes reflects his artistic growth and versatility.

“This EP is special because it shows the different sides of my music. I want people to understand that I am not limited to one genre. I can do dancehall, Afro-pop, gospel and many other styles,” he said.

Beyond his personal ambitions, the musician is also focused on uplifting other upcoming artistes from Karoi. He revealed that he is mobilising young musicians to form a music clan aimed at transforming the entertainment scene in the town.

“So far we have six artistes in the movement and we are expecting more to join us. Karoi has talent, but we need exposure and support. We want to raise the showbiz standard here,” he said.

Fun Killer also called on local radio stations in Mashonaland West, particularly Kasambabezi Radio Station and Platinum FM, to support local artistes by giving them more airplay and engagement opportunities.

Music analysts say Zimbabwe’s creative sector continues to witness the rise of talented artistes from smaller towns who are using digital platforms, local radio and live performances to build national brands outside traditional entertainment hubs such as Harare and Bulawayo.

Fun Killer’s growing list of live performances and invitations from club owners suggests the Karoi artiste may finally be stepping into the spotlight after years of persistence behind the scenes.
