PSL sponsors’ unveiling next week

Staff Writer

THE Premier Soccer League (PSL) will next week know the sponsors for the 2004 season, Independent Sport heard this week.

f”>The 2004 season which starts on March 6 was delayed by the national team’s participation at the African Cup of Nations in Tunisia.

Acting PSL chairman Tendai Madzorera said the league had given all sponsors until February 16 to decide on their willingness to sponsor the premiership.

“We have talked to Delta, OK Zimbabwe and a new sponsor and we have given them February 16 as the latest date,” he said.

Madzorera could not be drawn into naming the prospective new sponsor saying they had requested anonymity in the meantime. He said BP Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd had said it was not capable of sponsoring the knockout tournament this year citing harsh economic conditions.

BP and Dairibord Zimbabwe Ltd withdrew their sponsorship last year citing the harsh economic climate.

On the registration of players, Madzorera said PSL had no problem as long as teams met the deadline.

He said PSL has been in touch with Zifa and international matches have been considered in the drafting of fixtures.

Dynamos and Amazulu will compete in the Confederation Cup and Champions League respectively while the national team will participate in the World Cup qualifying matches and the Cosafa Cup.

“We have been given dates by Zifa and the dates will be considered in the drafting of the fixtures,” Madzorera said.

Last year there was chaos as PSL did not consider international matches.

Meanwhile, nominations for the post of secretary and chairman of PSL close on Thursday with the Nomination Court announcing candidates on February 21.

Elections are scheduled for February 29.
