OH, Sports Club

THE rivalry between Old Hararians and Harare Sports Club goes back a long way.

The great rivalry has its roots in the traditional school antagonism between Prince

Edward and Churchill, from whose old boys the two Harare clubs drew their membership.

Up to this day the majority of players from OH are former PE boys, while Sports Club still has a bias pool of current and former Churchill schoolboys. So the Tigers-Bulldogs rivalry builds up at a more senior level.

Tomorrow, the two sides meet again at OH in the final of a league no one knows what to call. It’s supposed to be a national league, but only Harare teams are playing.

With the disappointment of the World Cup elimination likely to have a serious effect on domestic rugby interest, victory will all the same be sweet for one of the clubs tomorrow.

Sports Club team manager Blessing Chiutare summed up tomorrow’s clash: “It’s a final, and we treating it like that, a final.

“We’ve got a game plan specifically for them, and we will play our hearts out. We have played well the whole season and winning the final will confirm that we are the best team in the country.

“The players are very positive. Beating OH at OH is what everyone wants.”

The OH camp was equally enthusiastic. Stan Matare, the OH manager, who has seen his side dominate local rugby with so much verve, says winning the championship, like they have done in the past four years, is something his players are getting used to.

“We are very much prepared,” Matare said. “Sports Club always gives up a hard game. It will be a tough and interesting final. They are hungry, they want it. But we also want it.

“We want to make it five on a roll. We always guard the championship jealously, and there is no way we can let it go just like that.” – Staff Writer.
