BUZ mulls new national league

IN what could be a major development for basketball, plans to formulate a blueprint for the formation of a national league are under way, IndependentSport heard this week.

P>The league will have members of various provinces and other structures within the basketball fraternity. In a wide-ranging interview this week, Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) secretary-general Donald Wasterfall confirmed plans to introduce the national league.

The major constraint however would be securing sponsorship to launch and sustain the national league. Wasterfall said that BUZ was negotiating with the corporate world for sponsorship.

“By the end of the basketball season, we would have concluded structures for the formulation of a national league,” he said.

The current executive’s term of office expires in September next year.

Wasterfall said the national league would include all basketball constituencies. Currently there are five basketball constituencies – Mashonaland Basketball Association (MBA), Matabeleland Amateur Basketball Association, Manicaland, Central League from Mashonaland Central and break-away Premier Basketball League (PBL). All the other associations except PBL are affiliated to BUZ.

Central League was admitted at the BUZ annual general meeting last month.

PBL was formed last year as a breakaway league from BUZ. On its launch, PBL had among its members Kingdom Cavaliers, CBZ Jewels, Interfin Celtic, Kango Giants from Bulawayo and Africa University, which defected from the Manicaland league.

Wasterfall said Kango Giants had been readmitted into MBA.

BUZ, Wasterfall said, had held talks with PBL clubs “so that they play BUZ-affiliated basketball”.

Wasterfall said the BUZ annual general meeting had rejected proposals to recognise PBL.

“The BUZ constitution states that it is a union of provincial associations and each province has a constituency and PBL could not explain which constituency they were representing,” said Wasterfall.
