THE circus in the local athletics fraternity over leadership continues with revelations that the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) dissolved the interim committee runni
ng theaffairs of Athletics Zi-mbabwe (AZ) without coming up with parameters for fresh elections.
IndependentSport established this week that SRC director-general, El-ias Musangeya wrote to Albert Muyambo, the AZ interim chairman a fortnight ago, advising that the body had dissolved the AZ interim committee and would for the time being run the association.
Muyambo confirmed this week that he had received a letter from the SRC announcing the dissolution of the interim committee. “Indeed I received a letter two weeks ago from the SRC that advised on the decision to dissolve the interim committee,” he said. “I am not aware of the way forward and have been advised to refer all questions to the SRC.”
Efforts to obtain a position of the SRC were in vain with Musangeya said to be at the All-Africa Games in Nigeria. The other officials claimed to be unable to respond on the athletics issue.
However, sources in the SRC revealed to this paper that Musangeya left for Nigeria without making any plans towards the holding of elections at AZ.
“I don’t think there is any plan for the holding of elections,” said the source. “Probably the director general would only address the issue when he comes back. For now, the SRC would be overseeing the affairs of AZ.”
Leadership wrangles have been bedevilling local athletics for the past three years prompting the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) to intervene. An interim committee has been at the helm of AZ but the IAAF has refused to recognise it – saying there should be elections to choose new leaders.
The international mo-ther body earlier this year ruled that elections for a substantive AZ leadership had to be held before the end of the year.
The SRC directed that the interim committee had to submit audited financial reports for the past three years in order for elections to be held. AZ is reported to have complied.
