INDUSTRY and International Trade minister Samuel Mumbengegwi this week said he was not aware of complaints about sub-standard products coming in from the Far East.
P>He said not even the Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) had come to him to complain about the “dumping” of goods.
“If the SAZ are quiet I assume that everything is fine,” he said. “There is no problem about goods coming from the East. Has anyone ever complained about products coming from Europe or the United States? Anyway who is complaining here?
“That’s totally mischievous (complaints), because it is the consumer who makes the decision on what to buy. If it is true, why is it that consumers are not saying anything about it? Also if it is true that those products are sub-standard, why are they not rotting in the shops, and why are they being bought in large quantities? This is a consumers’ choice. Why should someone buy a more expensive product when you can get it for less?”
